On Wednesday, March 13th 2019 MissionWorks@StMatthias will be hosting a critically important event at Victoria Hall in Westmount Quebec.
The event, "The Scared, The Scarred and Our Sacred Duty" is an information forum on the topic of human trafficking and forced labour/modern slavery.
This evening event is the first in what we hope to be a series of justice initiatives that will offer the public a clear and fact focussed opportunity to learn about this heinous crime that, according to the ILO (International Labour Organization -a UN agency based in Geneva) generates over 150 billion dollars in "profits" annually- with an estimated number of victims in access of 40.3 million people worldwide (2016).
As chair of Commons Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, our keynote speaker, Anthony Housefather MP is well-placed to speak to the issue with authority and insights. The committee has just released a report following a year of consultations held across the country. The document "Moving Forward In The Fight Against Human Trafficking In Canada" will be central to his presentation.
Other speakers include Kevin Dixon, the Executive Director of International Justice Mission-Canada. IJM is the largest anti-slavery organization in the world dedicated to ending slavery- and his talk will cover the international situation as well a focus on the cybersex exploitation/trafficking of children.
Connie Sorio, migrant justice and Asia partnerships coordinator for KAIROS Canada will speak to issue as it relates to migrant workers here in Canada.
There will also be representation from others....so please return to these pages for updates or follow us on Facebook
